June 2, 2010 | Kyla Breaks Away from Revivals in New Album

By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ
June 2, 2010, 10:10am

The wave of revival songs may just break soon with more and more artists reeling from it, including R&B Princess Kyla.

After the release of her sixth and seventh albums “Heartfelt” (2008) and “Heart 2 Heart” (2009) — both of which are mostly, if not all, comprised by remakes —Kyla is set to return to recording original songs such as her hits “Hanggang Ngayon,” “Not Your Ordinary Girl” and “I Feel For You.”

“It’s time na gumana naman ‘yung aming creative juices at mailabas ‘yun nang mabuti,” she told Bulletin Entertainment at the Tambayan OPM Awards ceremony.

So, the soulful singer’s next album would be an all-original one. It will retain a particular aspect of her previous releases, though: the well-loved collaborations.

Kyla recognizes that original compositions help cement an artist’s identity among her peers in the industry.

“Iba pa rin ‘yung nagkakaron ka ng hit na original, kaysa ‘yung magkaka-hit ka pero merong nagpasikat nang iba before you,” she maintained.

It’s challenging but exciting at the same time, Kyla enthused. And in preparation for her upcoming release, she banked on her songwriting chops once again (she co-wrote a number of compositions in some of her earlier albums, such as “You Make Me Feel,” “Beautiful Days,” and “I’m Into You”).

Aside from working on her eighth studio album, Kyla is busy preparing for a special compilation, which will be released in Indonesia and Malaysia this month. That album, she said, will contain songs from her previous albums, a Malaysian song, and “Hanggang Ngayon” translated in Malaysian.

With this move, which was similarly taken by fellow contemporary artists Christian Bautista and Aiza Seguerra, Kyla hopes that in time, she would be able to release an album all over Asia.

February 18, 2010 | 10 Best Pinoy Music Videos of the MTV Generation

#2 “Hanggang Ngayon” by Kyla

Why it’s really good: Cockroaches on a dinner plate and a dead guy in a murky bathtub, two strong images you would probably expect in an experimental rock track, make up the very surreal first video of R&B Princess Kyla. Singing about the lingering feelings of a dead romance, Kyla appears as a specter in a creepy mansion—metaphors that Sacris used to add another level to this gloomy song. The video made such an impact in the international community that it nabbed the 2001 MTV Viewer’s Choice Award for Southeast Asia, the final one ever given to any SEA artist.

The full list:
1. Ang Huling El Bimbo – Eraserheads
2. Hanggang Ngayon – Kyla
3. Astro – Radioactive Sago Project
4. Balisong – Rivermaya
5. Sugod – Sandwich
6. Disconnection Notice – Pupil
7. Yugto – Rico Blanco
8. Sana – Up Dharma Down
9. Harana – Parokya Ni Edgar
10. Sundo – Imago

February 18, 2010 | New Duet with Martin Nievera

Excerpt from the article

A new CD from Martin Nievera
By CRISPINA MARTINEZ-BELEN
February 1, 2010, 1:53pm

His fans would surely be delighted to know that Concert King Martin Nievera has a new CD entitled “As Always,” which is expected to prove that he is here to stay and will be for always one of OPM’s most sought-after artists. “As Always,” which boasts of the most collected songs of all time and which showcases Martin’s incredibly smooth vocals, is released by Polyeast Records and is now available at O Music and Odyssey Music and video outlets nationwide.

The album contains mostly revivals that cover a wide range of styles, and one of them is “You’re All I Need,” an original from the ’80s band hitmaker White Lion, which Martin renders in his own inimitable version. Another song in the album is his duet with R&B Princess Kyla, James Ingram’s “How Do You Keep the Music Playing,” performed in moving collaboration between the two of them.

The other songs in the 15-track collection of well-loved compositions are “Miles Away” (Colin Blunstone), “Every Time You Go Away” (Paul Young), “Honesty,” (Billy Joel) which Martin remakes with a more haunting style; “One Hundred Ways” (James Ingram), done with guitar hooks romancing Martin’s vocals; “If You Leave Me Now” (Chicago), a soulful rendition of Michael Jackson’s “One Day in Your Life,” “Fixin’ A Broken Heart” of Indecent Obsession, “Living Inside Myself” (Gino Vanelli), and “More Than You’ll Ever Know” (Michael Ruff).
